Countertop materials and prices
The material decides most of the price, and the published ranges are wide because slab grade varies so much within each material:
| Material | Price per sq ft | Source | Upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laminate | $15 to $60 (Fixr) / $10 to $40 (NailThePrice) | National / Pasadena | Not for hot pans |
| Butcher block | $40 to $100 | Fixr | Oil it; keep it dry at the sink |
| Solid surface | $40 to $100 | Fixr | Scratches can be sanded out |
| Granite | $40 to $150 | Fixr | Some types need sealing |
| Quartz | $50 to $100 (Pasadena); $80 to $120 installed (local guide) | NailThePrice / local guide | No sealing |
| Quartzite | $60 to $200 | Fixr | Hard; seal as advised |
| Marble | $75 to $200 (Pasadena) | NailThePrice | Etches with acids; seal |

Kitchen countertop replacement in Pasadena, CA: the permit line
Countertop replacement on its own is one of the few kitchen jobs the City of Pasadena's kitchen handout names as needing no permit, along with refacing cabinets. That changes when the job grows:
- Replacing or moving the cabinets under the counter: permit
- Moving the sink, adding an island or replacing the dishwasher: permit
- Adding or moving receptacles along the backsplash: permit
- Counters only, sink and cooktop reconnected where they were: no permit

Quartz and the silica rules
Engineered stone (most quartz) is still sold and installed in California. What has tightened is the fabrication shop: Cal/OSHA adopted updates to its permanent respirable crystalline silica standard in December 2024, and the California Department of Public Health publishes guidance for countertop fabrication employers, including air monitoring during engineered-stone work. For a homeowner, the practical step is to ask the fabricator how slabs are cut and polished and to keep on-site cutting to a minimum.

Edges, seams and sinks
Seams
Slabs come in limited lengths, so an L-shaped run or a long island usually has a seam. Planning it at a sink or cooktop cutout, or matching veining across it, is decided at layout, not at install.
Undermount sinks and edges
Stone and quartz allow an undermount sink, which leaves no rim to trap crumbs. Edge profiles from a simple eased edge to an ogee are priced by the foot, so ask for the edge to be named on the quote; a plain eased or small bevel edge suits most Pasadena kitchens, including Craftsman ones.

How countertop replacement runs
- 1Choose the material and slab
Pick the material, then the actual slab where veining matters; seams are planned around it.
- 2Template off the cabinets
The installed cabinets are templated exactly, including sink, cooktop and faucet holes.
- 3Fabrication
Slabs are cut, edged and polished in the shop, where dust control matters most for engineered stone.
- 4Remove the old top and install
Old counters come off, the new pieces are set, seamed and fixed, and an undermount sink is mounted.
- 5Reconnect and seal
Sink, faucet and cooktop are reconnected; natural stone is sealed if it needs it.
